Ein Computer, der so ähnlich wie ein Gehirn funktioniert – an dieser Idee arbeitet der Physiker Wolfram Pernice. Genauer gesagt beschäftigt er sich mit dem neuromorphen photonischen Rechnen, also neuronalen Netzwerken, bei denen Licht anstelle von Elektronen zum Einsatz kommt. Auf diesem Gebiet hat Pernice Pionierarbeit geleistet. Seine Studien verbinden optische Methoden der physikalischen Datenverarbeitung mit parallelen Berechnungen, die für die Implementierung Künstlicher Intelligenz (KI) zentral sind. Pernice‘ interdisziplinäre Forschung überschreitet traditionelle Grenzen und wirkt sich auf verschiedene Disziplinen aus – von den Naturwissenschaften über die Informatik und Ingenieurwissenschaften bis hin zur Chemie und den Biowissenschaften. Seine Forschungsergebnisse weisen den Weg zu innovativen und nachhaltigen Methoden, um den Energieverbrauch von KI-Computerhardware zu reduzieren und dennoch schnelle Berechnungen zu ermöglichen. Darüber hinaus ist er weltweit als Wegbereiter auf dem Gebiet der integrierten Quantenphotonik bekannt, insbesondere bei supraleitenden Einzelphotonen-Detektoren.

Mark Mattingley-Scott is the new head of Europe at Quantum Brilliance, a venture-backed German-Australian manufacturer of quantum computing hardware. Born in the UK, he heads the new European headquarters in Stuttgart, is responsible for the business and is responsible for the expansion of strategic partnerships. One of his first tasks is to set up company locations with highly specialized engineering and development teams in Freiburg and Ulm. Based on synthetic diamonds, Quantum Brilliance will produce quantum accelerators in small form factors that operate at room temperature and do not require cooling with liquid helium, for example. This will make it possible to provide quantum computing power in classical computing systems in the future. Carsten Rother received his diploma degree with distinction in 1999 from the University of Karlsruhe/Germany, and his PhD degree in 2003 from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) Stockholm/Sweden. From 2003 until 2013 he was researcher in the Computer Vision Group at Microsoft Research Cambridge/UK, lead by Andrew Blake. From 2014 until 2017 he was full Professor at TU Dresden/Germany. Since 2017 he is full Professor at Uni Heidelberg/Germany, heading the Computer Vision and Learning Lab. He is also coordinating director of the Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) and an AI consultant for companies. In the last years, two start-ups emerged from his lab https://rabbitai.de/ and https://www.copresence.tech/. His research interests are in the field of computer vision and machine learning, including related fields such as human-computer interaction and computational imaging. He has been working on a broad range of applications, such as image generation, image editing (incl. image segmentation, alpha matting, and deconvolution), image matching (incl. stereo matching, and scene flow), scene understanding (incl. 6D object pose estimation), and Bio-Imaging (incl. cell tracking). He has published over 270 articles (current H-index 93) at international conferences and journals. He received eight awards, including awards at CVPR ’13, CVPR ’05, CHI ’07, BMVC ’16 and ACCV ’14. He was awarded the DAGM Olympus prize in 2009. He has co-developed two Microsoft Products, GrabCut for Office 2010 and AutoCollage. He received prestigious funding awards, such as an ERC Consolidator Grant. He serves as area chair for major conferences and he has been associated editor for T-PAMI.

It was said many years ago that data is the new oil and since deep learning has also become increasingly important in the industrial environment, this
statement is more than true. If you don't have enough data, no AI can satisfactorily solve the problem at hand.
However, it is not just the sheer quantity that matters, but above all the quality and relevance of the data. If you have too little of it, synthetically generated data
can still help to solve the problem. With synthetically generated images in particular, however, there are a few important points to bear in mind to avoid
ending up at a dead end and producing useless data. It is fundamentally important that artificially generated images are sufficiently realistic.
However, it is often not clear what realistic means. As a human, having the impression that an image looks realistic is unfortunately not enough, because AI
models do not see like humans but only analyze numbers and learn statistics. An artificial image must therefore be statistically realistic. This is exactly what
we achieve with our DeepRendering approach, a method of generating synthetic images by learning the statistics of real images and transferring
it to the artificially generated images.

Viele Fragestellungen in der Wissenschaft, insbesondere bei der Bildgebung und der Simulation, erfordern die Lösung inverser Probleme. Typische Beispiele sind die Bildsegmentierung, Bildregistrierung, Bildrekonstruktion wie die Tomographie sowie die Parameterschätzung.
Standardstrategien basieren auf dem Ansatz der Tikhonov Regularisierung, diese haben aber Limitationen, die man mit neueren Entwicklungen lösen möchte. Dazu gehören Ansätze wie Total Variation, die die Spärlichkeit in den Resultaten ausnutzen. In Bereichen wie der Tomographie gehören diese zu den besten existierenden Verfahren. Weitere Erweiterungen, die beispielsweise vor allem in unserer Arbeitsgruppe entwickelt wurden, basieren auf anisotropen Techniken, die wir erfolgreich auf medizinische und industrielle Probleme anwenden konnten.

Angrenzend an diese Technik werden verschiedene Probleme der Bildanalyse, der Visualisierung von medizinischen und nichtmedizinischen Daten sowie der numerischen Simulation von partiellen Differentialgleichungen bearbeitet.

Aufgrund dieser grundlegenden Entwicklungen ist die Arbeitsgruppe eng an das IWR und das ZITI der Universität Heidelberg sowie an die Fakultäten Physik und Astronomie sowie Mathematik und Informatik angebunden.

Die Fragestellungen der Onkologie, die wir bearbeiten, sind die Diagnostik und Therapie von Tumoren unter Verwendung bildgebender Daten. Ein typisches Beispiel ist die Echtzeit-Brachytherapie, wo wir erstmals eine Planung realisieren konnten, die diese Aufgabe ca. 3 Größenordnungen schneller löst als konventionelle Ansätze und dabei eine Lösung findet, die in der Nähe des globalen Optimums liegt. Dieses Verfahren wird in einem DFG-geförderten Projekt weiterentwickelt, um für das geplante interventionelle MR in der Klinik eine MR-gesteuerte Brachytherapie durchführen zu können.

Andere Projekte sind RessScout (Ressourcenschonung und Ressourceneffizienz für Auszubildende) oder LehrRess (Lernen von Ressourcenkompetenz).Sein Forschungsprojekt powerado wurde 2010 vom Senat Berlin als bestes Berliner Dekadeprojekt ausgezeichnet. Sein Projekt KEEKS wurde 2018 auf der internationalen Klimaschutzkonferenz COP24 vom UN-Sekretariat für Klimaschutz ausgezeichnet. Von 560 Projekten aus der ganzen Welt gehörte KEEKS zu den fünf Gewinnern in der Kategorie “Planetary Health” und wurde als Leuchtturmprojekt mit seinem Beitrag zum Schutze des Klimas bezeichnet.

Wir gründeten unsere erste Firma und verkauften die neue Architektur an Atari, die sie mit 700.000 Computern auslieferte.
